A douole valved ¡¸left-ventricular assist device¡¹ has been implanted in Calfs and pumped continuously.
The Simply prepared blood-interface consisted of dacron fibrils sprayed on a polyurethane base.
Anti-coagulants are employed to prevent a too rapid fibrin buidup.
The pump is interposed between the left ventricular apex and descnding thoracic aorta. The pump is pneumatically activated.
Physiologic studies demonstrated an 80% average reduction in left ventricular peak pressure and maintenance of normal systemic pressure and blood flow.
He matologic evaluation disclosed a gradual decrease in red cell mass in three chronic animals for 14 days post-implantation.
Subsequently, hematocrit stabilized and L.D.H. levels returned to normal. However, red cell survival remained shortened. Plasma hemoglobin, platelets, thromboelastrogram, and serum haptoglobins were normal.
Although mild intravascular hemolysis was detected, the absence of thrrombo-embolic complications resulted in a significant extension of the bypass period.
